It is a true journal, just him jotting down his page goals and talking about his ideas for the characters, random notations of daily distractions. The editors left most of his grammatical errors and didn’t even attempt to fill in the gaps when they couldn’t read his handwriting.
All of this to say, this is for any scholar or writer who wants an insight into Steinbeck’s process. Any other literary merit is mute
