The back of the book has guided reading.
In the Prologue, he wishes the reader to think about wide brushes that are used to categorize an enemy in order to make it easier to enlist fighters. Although the word enemy is used, what seems to be hinted at is people should check in with their racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, or any other stumbling block that may not be justified.

It’s curious how the author is so deeply interested in and loving towards Dietrich and his family, yet so blind to his own politics. Book best bought from a used bookstore. Thus far, going straight into Chapter 1 won’t have the reader missing anything. Chapter 1 covers DB’s family, youth and WWI. The writing flows well, a good pace, and engaging.
