The gold charm is circular, but not a circle. One half is an anatomically correct heart, the other half is a bloomed rose. The two halves meld perfectly with each other, and I press my hand over the metal, letting my skin warm it.

I let my eyes slide closed. “I’d give everything for you.”
Her palm presses over my heart. “But I’ll never ask you to.”

My lips purse. “Are you saying I shouldn’t trust you?”
His arms tighten around me. “You shouldn’t trust me but I’m asking you to anyway.” Nero presses his nose to my hair and inhales. “I’ll lie, and cheat, and steal, and kill, and do whatever I need to do to protect you. But I’ll never lie to you about who I am. Okay?”

I sigh since he’s proving my point. “I said”-I turn my head to look back at him-“it’s-

I can’t put this book down.

Unknown: Did you seriously just give that man your phone number?
I swallow, my mouth feeling suddenly dry.

Oh my. Nero texting her in the cafe she works pretending not to know each other.

My hand lifts. “Are you real?” I whisper the question. Not meaning to, but not able to stop myself.

I watch the hand that picks up the money, putting it back in his wallet. But before he closes the black leather, he pulls out a hundred-dollar bill, setting it down between us
“I’m real, Sweet Girl.”


I’m dead. Omg. ASDFGHJKL

“I’m not staying,” he mutters it this time.
He sounds so resigned, even as he does the opposite of what he just said, and I almost laugh.
Nero drops onto his back, shifting the pillow, lifting his head and smacking it back down against the lumpy cotton, trying to get comfortable. With one final sigh, he stretches his arm out in my direction. “Come fucking cuddle with me.”

The stranger that climbed in through my second-story patio door, sat on my couch, watched my favorite movie and ate my popcorn-the man who went through my mail and learned my name, and apparently walked through my whole apartment while I slept; also, the same man who woke me up from a nightmare with his hand on my bare skin, shushing me, which should’ve terrified me, instead of calming me-stole my body wash.

Ok. Not what I was expecting. He comes into her house, sees the movie on screen and says it’s his favorite,and is now sitting next to her on the couch with the popcorn bowl.

This book is going to be good. <3
