I can't explain why...I'll try to diagnose it in my review, but even though the story is interesting I have no problem putting the book down. I'm never wishing I had more dishes to clean or a longer drive just to read more.

Halfway. Still unclear what the main character even wants. Unclear why I should root for him. Snooze.

I may give it like 10% more before I quit because this is lunacy. I've given the author like 400 pages to win me over and it still hasn't happened.

Letting you offhandedly know that two main characters had their first kiss and are now romantically involved, like "oh ya btw that happened a few weeks ago" IS INSANE BEHAVIOR from the author.

LIKE HELLO WHAT??? I don't want the Google AI overview of the story Mr. Ruocchio, tell me what happened!!! My goodness.

Low-key Hadrian is easily as much of a jerk as Crispian. I dunno if that's a hot take, but it is my take.

I'm all for fake and even hypocritical religions in fiction. Like go for it, I get it. I just think it's dull when it's obvious no one, even at the highest level, or at any point in its history, believed in it. Religions like that are just very rare, arguably non-existent in human history.

Same problem I have with the Bene Gesserit in Dune. It's a ploy up and down. It needs someone who believes it to "feel real."

Summary so far:

Hadrian Marlow's character doesn't like, want anything, he's kinda just, around. And he has a crush on someone.

Come to think of it, he's a lot like the girl from The Notebook.
