maybe i’m getting too trivial but i agree with the mom whenever he’d show up. anyways i really liked it, i just wished those themes were explored in a different way, but i am also not the target audience. so i suppose in that mindset i appreciated it. and the whole novels focus was not on that struggle for black people in the 60s, it was more so about paving the way for young root workers in family tradition.

the gullah people were the central focus and i liked that about the main family we saw. and i also think even if we didn’t move from settings and characters it really allowed us to get to the know the turners. those are my notes!

i thought it was going to be more about the integration of school children which the synopsis kind of leaned into but that was not prevalent. while i think the police scenes were vital to the story and eventually to their father, i kind of felt like maybe they did not end up anywhere, and the ending was not what i expected either. while i liked the nice police officer i felt like he made no difference.

and tradition was prominent in the protagonist related to a lot of what the human experience is. i kind of wish they dived more into 1960s culture, especially for black people, in more of a setting wise. while they did talk about the struggle of police brutality i wish that wasn’t the main focus, at times it kind of felt bleak and maybe that’s because we have a young audience.

i finished it in a week for class! i actually really liked it and the characters in the novel. i think it discussed good topics and themes essential for the reading audience. however in my personal opinion it was pretty scary for the age range lol. like some of the things jezebel experienced and saw was crazy. i also think it may be controversial in others pov but to me i really liked it. the discovery of ancestry
