Clarice I love the ya gothics that you read! Also it feels like other ya books back in the 80s treated ya in a more mature light. I wonder why there was a shift in the 2000s to essentially treat ya differently.

Honestly, I think Columbine played a big role in that. You can see a distinct shift in YA media becoming less violent in the late 90s/early 2000s after that tragedy because of all the media attention surrounding it, and the way people looked for ways to blame violence in films and TV shows (instead of, you know, guns).
