“We were speaking of a bodyguard for you, Lady.”
Kelsea glared at him for a moment before returning to her armor. She ran over the list of guards in her mind. “Pen. Can I have Pen?”
“Christ, what a relief. Pen wants the job so badly that I don’t know what I’d do with him otherwise.”

I’m so confused by everyone’s ages here. Kelsea is 19, the previous Queen (her mom) died at 28, Kelsea has been in hiding for 18 years. Okay. But all the guards who served her mom are in their forties (40-45 based on Kelsea’s estimation). How does that work? Did Kelsea’s mom only hire men in their 20s for her guard? Did they only serve her for a few years? Did her mom have her at 19? Why is this so opaque?

I think this is an error, but I don’t know yet. Kelsea takes off her necklace to compare it to the duplicate, then two paragraphs later says she’s “never dared to remove it” because her superstition is too strong. And I sense we’ll find out later it would be disastrous if she ever did. And yet the line here says, “She took off her own necklace.” Just…something I’ve noted.
