“Red” or whatever is a nothing burger of a character. His is an intentionally vague “bad guy” so the plot can progress by having him narrate his actions, he has no plan, no backstory, nothing. He exists only to put a humanoid face to the monster in this book, which is such a bizarre choice. This book man. It loves to restart the story with nonsequitters. The concept it interesting, but its execution feels so flawed. Why introduce the concept of these entities that you can’t perceive without forgetting, only to have a drug that totally negates that entire hook??? And all the entities are somehow also nonsentient, why?

This books seems more interested in rehashing the exact same opening plot over and over again rather than telling a continuous story. And even when it does try to tell a story such as that, it resets the character’s understanding and growth repeatedly, which while interesting in concept, stunts any character growth. I don’t need to know the story of how Quinn and Sheridan met, I could have assumed it from before!
