Raging Fortune

O, raging Fortune's withering blast
Has laid my leaf full low!
O, raging Fortune's withering blast
Has laid my leaf full low!

My stem was fair, my bud was green,
My blossom sweet did blow;
The dew fell fresh, the sun rose mild,
And made my branches grow.

But luckless Fortune's northern storms
Laid a' my blossoms low!
But luckless Fortune's northern storms
Laid a' my blossoms low!

Ye jovial boys who love the joys,
The blissful joys of Lovers;
Yet dare avow with dauntless brow,
When th' bony lass discovers;
I pray draw near and lend an ear,
And welcome in a Frater,
For I've lately been on quarantine,
A proven Fornicator

Getting Keith Flint vibes from this one! (I’m a Fornicator, twisted Fornicator….yeahhh)

Slowly getting to grips with Rabbie’s writing the more I’m reading it. He’s like a Scottish Eminem in that he can rhyme anything!

I’ll have this chonky poetry book on the go for quite some time as it’s not one to sit and read from cover to cover, but to pick up on occasion when I’m in the mood. The old Scots language looks tricky!

Caz That gives me flashbacks of trying to remember and recite his poems at primary school

😆 is it a kind of Rabbie PTSD?! 🤣 I’m thoroughly enjoying trying to work out wtf he’s on about, some of the poems are hard going, even my husband struggled yesterday and he’s Scottish! I’m noting the ones I like as I go. This is probably the first one I actually fully understood so far!

Yes we got them drummed into us 😂 tbf I really enjoyed reading them but I was the only one! It definitely takes a bit of getting used to but the more you read the more you understand and it helps to listen to them too. Where in Scotland is your husband from?

He was actually born in Vereeniging, South Africa, but moved to Scotland when he was two, his parents were from West Calder and they moved back there for his dad’s work.
