"It was worse when it began to be clothed upon with detestable attributes; and out of the shifting, insubstantial mists that had so long baffled his eye, there leaped up the sudden, definite presentment of a fiend."

A little difficult for me to decipher at times with its old-style language, but still an intriguing story. When I was young, I watched several movies based around the story, and I liked every one of those movies. I've now finally tried the book version--that took me way too long....

I can't find the right edition; mine is 65 pages for a Kindle Unlimted edition, so I'm just going on the % read with this book.

F. P. So far to me, strangely (ahem), this book reads like a metaphor and has a modern application. I’ve often wondered how lawyers in particular can stomach having to help people when those lawyers know those people are horrible.

Should the oaths people swear to and the ideological principles of civilization people agree to take precedence over doing the kind thing? Should those principles help the horrible and thereby reward them and harm the not-horrible and thereby punish them? Something is very screwed up there.

In my opinion, this kind of thing has gone too far in one direction to make up for old barbarisms and insensitivities to people, and that’s led to new barbarisms and insensitivities to people. Exceptions to helping the horrible should exist all over the place; otherwise, the system is enabling the horrible.

And I say this as half a classical liberal (a nearly extinct breed) and half a nihilist in philosophy. But I think there desperately need to be corrections here, because so much has gone off the rails now into insanity.
