The writing problem where you’re trying to make a sci fi world have progressive sexual politics but it takes so long to draw it out how that would work in practice it just horseshoes back to sterile and bland depiction of a purported progressive sexual politic. It sucks that free love is such a loaded and misogynist term because I feel that is so often what writers are going for without the baggage of the term

Having a character literally say “Explain X Worldbuilding Aspect to me like I’m a child” kind of overshot lampshading and just went to cloying. Like I get it is supposed to be tongue and cheek but let’s stand on business and have a little self respect. This is a narrative I don’t really need winks at the reader like this is a self aware nonfiction book

Also the Space Exploration Historical Drama descriptions of people getting caught in sandstorms instead of rainstorms like a regency tv drama did make me laugh
