Try making a fault seem easy to correct rather than an eternal flaw.

“Be sympathetic with the other person's ideas and desires” (Carnegie 302).

Even if it is your idea, allowing the other person to believe it’s his or hers significantly increases the likelihood of them accepting the idea.

Allow the other person to talk more than you.

“If you are wrong, admit it quickly and emphatically” (Carnegie 243).

“Show respect for the other person's opinions. Never say, ‘You're wrong’” (Carnegie 232).

Arguments never win over an opponent. Recognize the merits of their position, if you are not willing to consider their side of the issue then they also won’t.

“Always make the other person feel important” (Carnegie 185).

“Talk in terms of the other person's interests” (Carnegie 182).
