Not sure if Beagle intended Michael to be as dislikable as he is, but I'm sure he was meant to be flawed. I don't mind either as long as I get where they are coming from and there is growth. First one check, second one we'll see. And there are Rebeck and the Raven which I like very much.

Being 44, the age Rebeck thinks Mrs Klepper to be, I realise that this might be the one thing that gives away, that Beagle was 19 (!) and unexperienced, when he wrote this thing. I love Gertrud as a character, but she sounds 30 years older than she is.
