Really impressed. With his diaphanous style and eye for detail, Keller lifts his otherwise dry subject matter into airier heights; every transaction, notarization, and dull committee meeting glitters under the light of his pale-blue-evening Prose. The scene with pitiful Wohlwend (too inept to be a real antagonist), up to his knees in a brook, gathering crabs and trying to chill a bottle of wine, is wonderful.

Keller's diaphanous style and eye for detail lift his otherwise dryly material (finances, social issues) subject matter into airier heights; every transaction, notarization, and dull committee meeting glitters under the light of his pale-blue-evening Prose. The scene with poor Wohlwend, up to his knees in a brook, gathering crabs and trying to enjoy his wine, is wonderful.

Really impressed. Keller's writing is diaphanous enough that even though his actual subject matter is dryly material (finances, social issues) the total effect is nevertheless airy; every transaction, notarization, and dusty committee meeting is aglitter in a perpetual evening light.

Reading this because of (1) W.G. Sebald's terrific essay — panegyric, really — on Keller, with special focus on his political and cultural prescience, and (2) as part of an attempt to rectify my lifelong, baseless neglect of realist fiction.
