Uuuuugh! I am so close to finishing and so monstrously fatigued by this over-sugared empty piece of confection. If the author had simply sufficiently explored one of the many plot conflicts she’d initially set up she wouldn’t have needed so much manufactured melodrama. But why am I even complaining? I’m reading a romance novel. What did I expect from the genre? Nuance?

I will finish this. I am determined

For the most part I am enjoying this book for what it is. And I certainly WANT to enjoy it. After all what else is the point of reading a silly period romance from the 80s? This is not literature and not trying to be. But I’m too annoyed by the contrived situations, anachronisms, two-dimensional characters, and forced misunderstandings. I know all of this is the point. But why can’t I just turn off my brain?
