I have such a hard time telling between the factions: for sure the British government is on one side, but there are also tons of splits between the Protestants and the Catholics and the IRA proper and all its splinter groups… but I think that is kind of the point? The Irish Republican movement was a hot mess that amounted to a ton of neighborhood murder. Crazy that so much of this was in my lifetime.
