I’m trying hard to be open to falling in love with this book like everyone else, but so far my disbelief is unsuspended. The prose is cozy and colorful though. That’s nice.

Little surprised we’re 80% through and haven’t even scratched the Air Jordan years yet, but hey, it’s all been interesting! Building a successful company and scaling it is SO difficult, one of the hardest things on earth to do. It’s interesting to hear his personal reflection on what it took for them to make it— and what it took FROM them to make it.

It was not a skill that came naturally to him, so he valued it. I respect that and can empathize.

He is a PHENOMENAL writer. This is so enjoyable and he makes me believe I can sell shoes, haha

I FREAKING KNEW IT! I called this like 1300 pages ago: Sandringham. You jerk.

I am afraid. I have heard what’s coming, I know this book ends on a heartbreaking cliffhanger and I think I know what it is. I am prepared to sob 🥺🥺🥺 let’s finish this today!

17 hours in and I’m STILL only 45% through! But these books are so immersive, and that’s kind of what I was craving after a summer of let-downs and predictability (I hate so much contemporary fiction, especially prize winners). Take me away, Jamie and Claire!

Well this is devastating but also probably an extremely cathartic story for people-pleasers.

The author does such a good job constructing familiar, awkward interactions where you don’t quite understand people’s drift, and they make YOU feel responsible it, either purposefully or inadvertently.

I have caught the vision ☺️ Need me a Scottish clan and my man needs a brogue STAT!

Meditation, what is it? It’s safe. It’s sitting. As if that’s what we need more of. It’s the Netflix of spirituality! If you want to get in touch with something greater than yourself, try getting uncomfortable.

Saccharine, and not at all about female incarceration or justice like I thought it would be.

I have such a hard time telling between the factions: for sure the British government is on one side, but there are also tons of splits between the Protestants and the Catholics and the IRA proper and all its splinter groups… but I think that is kind of the point? The Irish Republican movement was a hot mess that amounted to a ton of neighborhood murder. Crazy that so much of this was in my lifetime.

So far this author comes across pretty unhinged. Not impressed with his enormous claims and gaping lack of citations or corroboration. Reading for book club, but a little bit dreading the discussion.

I know the ending, because I saw the movie back in the day, but this is STILL such an intense read! 🥺🥵🫶

Time to reread my 2025 favorite book, this time for book club!

I am prepared to break my own heart listening to this book, to get ready to save my little girls’ hearts!

These are so depressing but sooooo good, can’t put it down 🥺

The author keeps jumping to different eras in the space race: Mercury to Apollo 1 to the first space shuttle, back to World War II and Werner van Braun, back to Apollo 11. I honestly don’t understand why, it’s very confusing. He’s not going by topic, not following one person, it’s like he just decides to talk about whatever thing interested him next. Don’t know if I can finish.

… but a sacred flaw is still a flaw. One problem with defensive architecture is that you don’t control it, it controls you. And it tends to get outdated.

At some point, most people realize their models are no longer working. Avoidant people want to become more attached. Deprived people want to feel their full worth. Overreactive people realize a life of strife brings ruin on herself.

Most people have a ‘sacred flaw,’ a model you built early in life of how you see the world that helps you defend yourself from abuse or neglect and anticipate how people will behave. It steers you to act in ways that get you affirmed and loved. We seek out the people and media that confirm our models. You can get a sense for someone’s model by how they complete the sentences “I’m only safe when”

Ok I get it. I want her to be my grandma, my matriarch, my inner voice, I want inspirational posters on my wall of every other sentence ☯️

Yay for a good, short, interesting book club read coming at me straight from 1955!

I want, first of all, to be at peace with myself. I’m seeking perhaps what Socrates asked for: “May the outward and inward man be as one.”

Time to understand the fire in which teenage and college Lindsey’s personality was forged.

When we see truth as a set of ideas, then religion becomes a set of doctrines. However, from the point of view of person-truth, faith is much more than a belief in ideas. We have faith in God, the same way we are faithful to our spouses: by making and keeping sacred covenants. The focus of our faith changes from a set of doctrine to our relationship with the truth made flesh (Christ).

I remember I turned off the AppleTV+ show quickly because I found Claire Danes’ protagonist so unlikable. I’m having the same experience with the book.

If I didn’t need a new best seller from 2016 for my reader challenge this year (apparently I’ve read all the other good 2016 books already), I probably would have DNFd by now. Hanging on by a thread…

Three hours in and literally nothing has happened yet. This will probably be my least favorite of her books.
