Time to reread my 2025 favorite book, this time for book club!

I am prepared to break my own heart listening to this book, to get ready to save my little girls’ hearts!

These are so depressing but sooooo good, can’t put it down 🥺

The author keeps jumping to different eras in the space race: Mercury to Apollo 1 to the first space shuttle, back to World War II and Werner van Braun, back to Apollo 11. I honestly don’t understand why, it’s very confusing. He’s not going by topic, not following one person, it’s like he just decides to talk about whatever thing interested him next. Don’t know if I can finish.

… but a sacred flaw is still a flaw. One problem with defensive architecture is that you don’t control it, it controls you. And it tends to get outdated.

At some point, most people realize their models are no longer working. Avoidant people want to become more attached. Deprived people want to feel their full worth. Overreactive people realize a life of strife brings ruin on herself.

Most people have a ‘sacred flaw,’ a model you built early in life of how you see the world that helps you defend yourself from abuse or neglect and anticipate how people will behave. It steers you to act in ways that get you affirmed and loved. We seek out the people and media that confirm our models. You can get a sense for someone’s model by how they complete the sentences “I’m only safe when”

Ok I get it. I want her to be my grandma, my matriarch, my inner voice, I want inspirational posters on my wall of every other sentence ☯️

Yay for a good, short, interesting book club read coming at me straight from 1955!

I want, first of all, to be at peace with myself. I’m seeking perhaps what Socrates asked for: “May the outward and inward man be as one.”

Time to understand the fire in which teenage and college Lindsey’s personality was forged.

When we see truth as a set of ideas, then religion becomes a set of doctrines. However, from the point of view of person-truth, faith is much more than a belief in ideas. We have faith in God, the same way we are faithful to our spouses: by making and keeping sacred covenants. The focus of our faith changes from a set of doctrine to our relationship with the truth made flesh (Christ).

I remember I turned off the AppleTV+ show quickly because I found Claire Danes’ protagonist so unlikable. I’m having the same experience with the book.

If I didn’t need a new best seller from 2016 for my reader challenge this year (apparently I’ve read all the other good 2016 books already), I probably would have DNFd by now. Hanging on by a thread…

Three hours in and literally nothing has happened yet. This will probably be my least favorite of her books.

Just my kind of fantasy novel: 5% fantasy/world-building and 95% action— in this case, daring con jobs by lovable thieves in a Venice-like setting. Excellent audiobook narrator!

I’m moaning this is so well-written 🤩 a devastating but highly entertaining recounting of Washington’s disastrous loss of Manhattan starts the book 😱 The British Navy’s ships were so elitely trained, they landed 4,000 men in just 10 minutes 🥺 Washington was at first devastated then furious at the total breakdown of his petrified, retreating troops. Love his fury and hunger to win 😍

Well jeez didn’t expect to be crying in this book, but his tribute to his mom, the medical director of FDNY during 9/11, got me feeling many things

In retrospect: M. Night Shyamalan and Nicholas Sparks, what did I expect??

This year I am completing the Pioneer Book Store’s 2026 Reading Challenge. I’m excited! 50 books from various genres, award lists, and great random categories like “book with a white cover” and a popular book from 1986, 1996, 2006, and 2016. If I complete it, I get $50 in store credit.

DNF’ing, but not because I didn’t like it. Because I didn’t finish it in October and I have no less than 14 other books on my nightstand to barrel through.

Ether is my spirit animal and this author might be my (other) soulmate. I love that he just casually inserted instructions on always asking for a lawyer when talking to feds for anxious 2020s readers.

The observational humor about Internet-derived antisocial behavior is so cleverly written, it’s scary 💀

I wish these weren’t so darn digestible; I mowed through 2/3rds of volume 5 tonight in one sitting! My supply of Victorian hijinx and eligible bachelors is going to run out soon!

Pierce, a bohemian alcoholic with his arm around some girl? I didn’t think it could happen, but Brower swiftly, deftly pulled him off his pedestal with just that one mental image. To be replaced by Treasure Island in a blue bow 🩵

I have been intrigued and on the fence throughout this book, and tantalized by the fact that it is so divisive among my friends: only 5 stars or 1 stars. Well, I just got to The Part (you know it when you are there) and now I bet I will hate the rest…. Time to hate-binge to the end!
