“That’s the nature of money: whether you have it or not, whether you want it or not, where you like it or not, it will try to define your days. Our task is to try to not let it.”

Little surprised we’re 80% through and haven’t even scratched the Air Jordan years yet, but hey, it’s all been interesting! Building a successful company and scaling it is SO difficult, one of the hardest things on earth to do. It’s interesting to hear his personal reflection on what it took for them to make it— and what it took FROM them to make it.

“ the art of competing is the art of forgetting: forgetting your limits. You must forget your doubts, you must forget your pain, you must forget the voice screaming inside you to stop. And when you cannot forget, you must negotiate. One more lap, one more step.”

As a non-business guy, I always find martial metaphors so corny. 🙄

I usually don't love them either (and in general, I don't read self-help or business-y books), but I have been thinking a lot about leadership lately, both because I've become a relief society president and am thus feeling humbled to be in charge of 130 very different households, AND I've been in charge of some difficult management issues that have lasted over a year at work. Because of both of these lengthy "campaigns," so to speak, I resonated with the last two words of this quote: pressurized grace. Martial stoicism does appeal to me now in a way it hasn't ever before!! Dealing with people longterm is a SLOG!
