Just my kind of fantasy novel: 5% fantasy/world-building and 95% action— in this case, daring con jobs by lovable thieves in a Venice-like setting. Excellent audiobook narrator!

I’m moaning this is so well-written 🤩 a devastating but highly entertaining recounting of Washington’s disastrous loss of Manhattan starts the book 😱 The British Navy’s ships were so elitely trained, they landed 4,000 men in just 10 minutes 🥺 Washington was at first devastated then furious at the total breakdown of his petrified, retreating troops. Love his fury and hunger to win 😍

Well jeez didn’t expect to be crying in this book, but his tribute to his mom, the medical director of FDNY during 9/11, got me feeling many things

Oh dang, when the jacket said “A supernatural love story,” I didn’t think they meant scary!

In retrospect: M. Night Shyamalan and Nicholas Sparks, what did I expect??

This year I am completing the Pioneer Book Store’s 2026 Reading Challenge. I’m excited! 50 books from various genres, award lists, and great random categories like “book with a white cover” and a popular book from 1986, 1996, 2006, and 2016. If I complete it, I get $50 in store credit.

Finished the first one this morning:
-Newberry Award winner ✅ (Princess Academy).

Let’s do this 😎

DNF’ing, but not because I didn’t like it. Because I didn’t finish it in October and I have no less than 14 other books on my nightstand to barrel through.

Next year…

Ether is my spirit animal and this author might be my (other) soulmate. I love that he just casually inserted instructions on always asking for a lawyer when talking to feds for anxious 2020s readers.

I wish these weren’t so darn digestible; I mowed through 2/3rds of volume 5 tonight in one sitting! My supply of Victorian hijinx and eligible bachelors is going to run out soon!

Pierce, a bohemian alcoholic with his arm around some girl? I didn’t think it could happen, but Brower swiftly, deftly pulled him off his pedestal with just that one mental image. To be replaced by Treasure Island in a blue bow 🩵

I have been intrigued and on the fence throughout this book, and tantalized by the fact that it is so divisive among my friends: only 5 stars or 1 stars. Well, I just got to The Part (you know it when you are there) and now I bet I will hate the rest…. Time to hate-binge to the end!

It's a treasured experience to pick up a classic I've never yet read and quickly realize, "OOOOH. Yep. Got it. You deserved that classic status. Sold! TAKE ME ON THE RIDE!"

I remember the LOTR trilogy was like this for me. And Brave New World. And Count of Monte Cristo. I haven't gotten to the monster parts yet, but this narrative has me spellbound! This is BEAUTIFUL! Just in time for spooky season :)

I started this very skeptical (journalists writing about health-related science are responsible for some of the worst fad health trends in my lifetime). But at 39% I’m loving all the information about how nasal breathing is so much better for you in like ten ways, and how we have “devolved” as far as our breathing ability goes. I’m into it!

Lindsey Memory is 18% done with The Fox Wife
You gotta walk a REAL fine line when you attempt to write a historical fiction with a murder/revenge plot AND a supernatural element, but this book ain’t just walking, it’s STRUTTING down that line!

China 1908. “Fox wives” aka mythical foxes who can turn into seductive women who drain the life out of men. A fox on a mission to avenge the death of her baby at the hands of a photographer. So far so good!

This book is intense, dealing with the weight of the small group of physicists and mathematicians who created The Bomb and all the policies that came after it (like Mutually Assured Destruction). It also chronicles how many of these same men (they’re all men) went mad with the weight of their choices and the complexity of the new systems they’d postulated. Only read of you are in the mood for brooding!

I CANNOT believe this book was written in the author’s THIRD language. Writing superb, though topic so far has been sad and pessimistic, if humane.

Wow I’m essentially to the end of Season 2 of the show by this point in the book. This, like Dune, is the rare book where I’m glad I watched the movie/show first, it gives me great visuals and insight into the characters, where the book structure might have made me overlook things.

“Wool” was an absolutely terrible name. The change to “Silo” for the show was the right call.

Lindsey Memory is on page 129 of 194 of Body Safety for Young Children: Empowering Caring Adults
She has been referring to “Body Safety Rules” for the entire book but finally lays out eleven of them on p. 139. She should have written one book for parents and a second for teachers/coaches, nannies, etc. Instead she tries to talk to both separately, almost at random, and it is a confusing mess. I have to work to wrench good parenting advice out of it.

I’m kind of confused. She says her whole vision was for governments to be able to utilize Facebook as a policy tool, then she also says doesn’t want Facebook to be used for advocacy? I don’t understand the difference.
