The long, overexplained flashback is over.
This is still a 2 or 3 star story.
John clearly couldn't kill his darlings. That background lore he created, should've been kept as the authors "working knowledge"; to write out the full history is self-indulgent - and a mistake the editor should've caught.

63 pages, part two: now the story seems to be ready to begin; this is not a good thing. It's taking way too long, but it's getting more interesting and well enough written, so I will go from 2 stars to 3.

Read the first chapter; this is solidly in the 2-3 star area, not doubt about it.
I think this is going to be a slog to get through or a DNF.
