What an opening sentence, a story in itself!

End 2nd story: adélaïde & théodore. After my 1st reading i had thought it was about the difficulties of a couple to get married. After reading 2nd time i understand it is instead about the struggle between a young wife and her mother-in -law, which is a bit different! Interesting theme, since i don't think that de staël ever met her own mother-in-law, or certainly wasn't a regular part of her life.

End of the 1st story "Mirza ou lettre d'un voyageur".
1st time I read it, I thought this was a parable of classical liberalism - hoe to have your sugar and eat i ( without slavery). 2nd time reading this feels much more to be purely a vehicle to display Romanticism.

Would you be completely shocked if I said that Mme de Stäel was a fan of Rousseau?
