That's the problem with LitRPG, they do tend to start reading a bit like the Players' Guide or the Monster Manual after a while.

Hi Michael, thank you for your comment. It makes me feel a bit better to know about it, at least. I have always been pretty sceptical about litRPG because I'd rather play a video game than read about stats, loot and equipment. Nevertheless, I decided to give Dungeon Crawler Carl a chance. I thought there must be more to it than meets the eye, given its success. Indeed, I was surprised by the great character development and world-building in the first volume. However, the more I read, the more my initial suspicions are confirmed: it tends to focus on the game mechanics, leaving the characters, world and story in the background. Have you had experience with other books of this genre?

Hi Sara. I have played a fair amount of RPG in my younger days, and I have had some experience of the litRPG and Progressive Fantasy books. I enjoyed some more than others, but they do have a tendency to quote stats, so that can have the effect of drawing the reader out of the story. The ones I enjoyed the most were:

Battle Spire by Michael Miller
God of Gnomes by Demi Harper (Laura Hughes)
Kraken Rider Z by David Estes and Dyrk Ashton

Most of the others I have read have faded from my memory, but those three stand out as the best.

You're welcome. I have to rely on translation to read and understand Italian. I only read and speak in English.
