I think that overall rosmei translations are still better than 7seas but not by much 🫤

oh wow the Rosmei examples :D I hate this type of "written accent" or whatever you call it in English. The character can pronounce it like "d'you" but you can still write it as "do you".... that's how pronunciation works. Written English isn't meant to be a phonetic translation. You know what I mean? It's different from slang words, my point is these normal things like "you look" written as "y'look" which is just unnecessary....then again English is not my first language

This is honestly the first one that truly disappointed me in terms of translation. Rosmei is generally well done, imo. But yeah. :(

Same! I hate reading that shit. Especially when they get the accents wrong. The ML isn't even southern or Californian but they have him talking like that.

And some of the word choices are so dumbed down with phrases and words we don't even use out here in the states, which this story is based in.

ahh I'm so glad I'm not alone in this. And seriously basically everyone has an accent but only some characters get it written down...? Why does a southerner get this quasi-phonetic transcription but a New Yorker doesn't? And so on and so on :D And when it comes to translations.... This is why I just can't read The Summer Hikaru Died, why are these Japanese teenagers talking like American southerners? (at least that's what I think the accent is?) I suppose in the original they spoke more of a countryside Japanese dialect but then having them use an American accent is so jarring! and it works both ways, if someone translated a heavily accented/countryside American character as having a countryside Czech accent (my first language, so I'm using it as an example) I wouldn't be saying "oooooh they captured the countryside nature of this character well" I would be saying "why the fuck is this American country bumpkin speaking a very specific Czech accent/dialect that is limited to a very specific part of the country"? :D although I didn't realise the characters in this book are actually located in the USA, so the accent isn't entirely out of place. It's still weird to see it written down tho, stuff like "d'you" instead of "do you" is silly

also it's so weird it's using words you guys don't use out there! I wonder where is the translator from then?

and one more thing before I finish my already massive comment: your examples are a perfect case for why fan translations should stay online even after it's licensed in English! Just because something is official doesn't mean it's good!

Or they should just pay the fans translator instead of waisting time hiring someone else. If the translation is done so well with minimal or editable mistakes, it doesn't make sense to pay for someone else who does a shit job.
People should just write like normal and put in a note or something that they have a drawl or accent and people will make it up or understand it in their own head. 🙄
