I think the thing I hate most about novels from the early twentieth century is that they all contain repetitive, long-winded passages about how "plain looking" the protagonist's wife/daughter is. Saying she is unattractive once or twice, fine. But the same adjectives 50 times? If I had a nickel I'd have a benny, etc, etc
