On page 7, Wulfhere potentially makes a jape after grinning, but on page 22, it is pointed out that Wulfhere isn't known for making japes. I only noticed because "jape" isn't a word one often sees.

The narrator says "dropping eaves" like he's Sam Gamgee instead of the more proper "eavesdropping." It's one thing to hear that kind of humor in the dialogue to develop character, it's another having the omniscient 3rd person narrator say it. It immediately dropped me out of the story.
