Wow just read someone's status and call me naive but I am shocked that people unfriend each other not because of anything personal but because they disagree on a book! I can understand unfriending someone if they were rude (I did that myself recently) but differing over opinions over a book just seems a tad drastic.

Lol that has happened to me not only that but that person went to same GRs friends that we had in common and those friends unfriended me too. This was just childish bullsh*t. They acted like high schoolers. 😒🙄💁🏻 and me I didn't even care. Lol so the joke's on them. 😜

It just boggles the mind that some people can do that! I love your honesty in your reviews so their loss!
I've had people unfriend me for no reason. I respect everyone's opinion but some are just childish and if they don't get their way, they pout. It's like middle school
It's just bad manners to suddenly unfriend someone just like that. I still have my first GR friends and a some new great ones that hopefully won't just cut me off because I have a different opinion! Lol
It's pretty crazy! I had a little group of gals unfriend and block me because of my opinion on a scene in a book. I didn't write a review or even shelve it- I commented on a friend's review. Oh well!
That's just crazy Cyndi. Just wow I can't think of anything to say to that apart from maybe it's better not to have them on your friends list if they got that upset over a book!
That is crazy. I secretly get bummed when someone doesn't like books I love (Harry Potter), but we are all entitled to our opinions. Even when it is obvious that they are wrong....Okay, I'm kidding about the last part. Kind of.
I adore my friends from college, and with some we are on VERY different poles of political persuasion but, hey, that's life. To get in a snit over a book review???
Actually saying that I remember I spoke up for a few of my GR friends because a former GR friend of mine went on a rampage about them because "how dare they voice their feelings" about a scene to the author (an author who was pretty cool about it) and the next thing I knew I was unfriended and blocked by her and I think one or two mutual friends. Maybe it's the same one Cyndi!
I know right Vintage? I love books and am very passionate about them. I like what I like and dislike what I dislike. Would I get into a debate about others don't feel the same way? No because I respect we all have different tastes and different interpretations on books. To unfriend someone for differing opinions that's just mad!
That's just sad. I love that GR's a great forum to voice book opinions. But I guess some people don't know that or can't handle different views. Better to be un-friended than them spewing direct or passive-aggressive poison on GR about your differing views. *sigh*
Good point, Fre! I was never in such situation, but after reading your comment I must admit, that I would probably consider to unfriend/unfollow a GR user if she/he would positively rate/review a book with rape, degrading of people or similar. I'm also very sensible about cheating. I'm lucky my GR-friends have similar triggers! But never say never.
Not to put down virtual friendship, but I've learnt hard lessons along the way that they can come and go, because of the strangest and sometimes, the stupidest of reasons.
I have some great GR friends and even though I know I can read darker books which some of them would never think of reading I respect them for knowing that different tastes in books does not equal severing a friendship because of it. If in real life I made it a point to get all stroppy because I didn't have the same opinions as them then I think I would be a very lonely person!
Definitely. But I'm not surprised (given all the political correctness that has grown throughout the years) that it takes very little these days to offend people.
Hmm. I think I'm the bad guy here :-(I have my limits and there are things I would never accept in people I'm friends with. I won't ever say hello to a person who thinks that it's ok to harm/hurt an animal, same to the person who think that cheating is ok. If someone has an opinion it's not far away to act like this. I send my friend requests only to GR users I checked the books and read some reviews. I could of course just ignore reviews out-of-my-opinion, but they would still pop up in my update feed, so I pay attention when I add a friend.
As to the dark books: if a books justifies rape and abuse, I would not tolerate it. Sue me. Judge me.
If my comments made someone uncomfortable and you don't like me anymore, I won't be mad if you unfriend/block me.
P.S. Is there such button as block a user?

Uh oh Alex, when I started reading like 6 years ago I used to rate everything high it didn't bothered me that there was cheating, rape and I don't think I have read anything with abusing animals does that mean you'll unfriend me now? 😮😱 BUT that was before and now everything bothers me but I wouldn't dream of unfriending someone because we have different opinions or views unless they attack me. 😉
P.S. At the bottom of the person's profile page you'll see that you can block/unblock someone. Hope it's not me. 😘

LOL, Leonor, my comment was not to you and not to Fre. I also had other preferences in the past. But we speak about today. And I stick to my words. I'm honest and I don't have many many friends in real life, but the friends I have are good people.
I don't tolerate "bad" books, coz they help society to built a positive opinion about disturbing issues.
Nevertheless I did never negatively comment on a review I don't agree with and won't do it. But I won't click like either.
Life is too short to argue, but also too valuable not to defend your morals.
I think sticking to your principles is an admirable thing Alex so I for one am not uncomfortable about your beliefs. I have read books with rape and violence. I can read it when it's written in books where in the plot device it's believable. In no way will I read a anything that justify's rape or condones it.....I'm not that open minded! I don't know of anyone that would remain friends with someone who condones rape in any form so I agree with you Alex. Maybe I should have been more clear and said that I can't believe people unfriend each other for things like which character in a book they disagree with?
The world is filled with immature narcissists, Fre! If they don't gaze into their own reflection all of the time, they become unhinged. LOL.*hugs*
