Just read "Chapter One: The Map". Cousins Fone, Phoney, and Smiley Bone have been chased out of Boneville after Phoney's shady business deals got exposed. Fone gets separated from the others in a swarm of locusts and ends up travelling through the mountains by himself. He enters a lush valley, has encounters with monsters, and is told to see someone named Thorn, but gets stuck in the valley when winter arrives.
