Okay I'm locking in my guess now. Pat is the crazy paranoid type- which is why his wife didn't want to tell him about the intruder. With nothing to occupy his time he went wild with it. The family grew more isolated and more insular until one day he lost it. So he's meant to parallel Dina in this case. My nephew has locked in the grandma as the killer.
