"That one was" the commander says as he points out women. The commander is telling how these "things".... these women use to have professions, he is telling how they use to be able to sustain themselves....

"... And then I saw my mother." She writes as she tells about the p'rnography the Handmaids were shown to them as torture and examples of bad behaviour. She proceeds to draw a portrait of her mother in her young days as the most beautiful thing on earth, omitting the reason why her mother is brought up. Oh my this book I cant its so well writteeennn
