This novel is not joyous but it is moving. The descriptions of children, Garner's observations of them and descriptions of her interactions with them are sublime. The author writes from her real life, I recall the setting from her book of essays. She's an older woman and her lack of patience with the bizarre notions of others rings very true. The book is also timely in its look at alternative quack medicine.
