I was worried based on GR reviews, but I’m liking this so far. The audiobook narrator is good, too (except for one accent that was… questionable). It may be tedious to others, but I enjoy when an artist lays bare their references, seen here in the many theorists, books, and poems mentioned. Let me see them citations!

another note for future amber to think about when writing a review—with the importance of subject/objecthood to yrsa and the story, i’m surprised that we never get to the point of questioning the validity of the “subject” as a position in which liberation can be won, or if there is a different type of “subject” to be created. i can’t get too into this because that’s like a dissertation’s worth of study (clearly as that is what yrsa is doing) and i haven’t done that much reading or thinking about this.

like does yrsa becoming subject (if she can, if black people can) save us? does aspiring to subjecthood save us? and if object has been defined as a class of people, as black, in the aftermath of chattel slavery, does that structure remain if somehow yrsa becomes subject? in other words, if we are subject all of a sudden, then who is object? idfk bro
