In this section, all Charles can do is wallow and think of how he would throw stones with Hartley at their aunt’s pond. James at this time asks Charles if he remembers throwing stones at their aunts pond with him, so I think in the same way that Hartley is an inseparable childhood figure to Charles that manifests ghosts for him, is Charles to James.
