Okay I liked that it ended with her claiming her true name, that was really powerful. I wish that the little girl was Magdalene’s kid though that would’ve been cute. I also think it was a VERY realistic ending as well. Of course they wouldn’t budge from being ornery. It was very historically accurate I feel like. Good book I enjoyed it.

Forgiveness and how it was pitched ain’t enough for me. The kumbayah shit reallyyyyy fucking irked the hell out of me. I think it was an important moment, I just didn’t like how it was presented

I just feel like Jemma Isn’t eating down her “gotcha bitch clock it” the way she could’ve been. Like her monologues are too long. We don’t need a recap we were there damn😩 and they don’t need to know every little detail.

Yeah so that one person who was like “I don’t believe in forgiveness enough to finish the second half of this book” I’m right there with them. My spiteful ass is thinking of all the ways me Honrine and Simone would’ve been at it.

I think this book shifts around light skin and darker skinned perspectives in a realistic way. I think it also positions the reader to think like the lighter folk at times because we don’t hear the narratives of the slaves and Inèz like that. “Cut out tongues” n all. Ik the rest of the book will be about closure for the enslaved n what not. It really has been making me think about how I feel—color wise.

I knew Agnes was her mom! I fucking knew it! My guess is that Horrine cursed her back and wasn’t thinking about the fact that if she can’t talk she remove the curse. I also feel like maybe they’ve been eating the slaves or something because of them not being able to leave and there being no trace of them

New favorite quote: “the sax low and sultry out of place in broad daylight. That song was for evenings spent in dimly lit rooms before a hand pulled the cord under a tasseled lampshade and caressed a waiting body”

I BET YOU the “one slave we got in our family who won’t a duchon” was probably Jemma’s ancestor!!!! And I bet they ducked off to Chicago and cursed the whole damn family on her way out. I literally BET YOU that’s what this is.

So far, I actually really like it! My ethnicity feels represented in some ways. I can tell this is going to take me some time to finish though. Hard copies always take me longer, but I don’t think I mind so far. I think this is the only book I’ve started recently that I was fairly interested from the first chapter.
