Finished Chapter One (A Dynamic Approach Faithful to the Gospel). Mostly introductory but very eye opening. Sadly most of the AI haters will never read this encyclical and assume the Pope is vehemently against AI, the level of nuance here is quite deep yet any online debate about this is completely without. Reading about Social Doctrine makes me proud to be in the conversion process.

Read the first half of Chapter Four (Safeguarding Humanity at a Time of Transformation). The Pope starts to really take shots at individual issues. Misinformation, education crisis, unemployment, dehumanization, & capitalist exploitation. More attacks on the power that tech leaders have. Dropping bangers on every page.

Read Chapter Three (Technology and Dominance, the Grandeur of Humanity in light of the Promises of AI). I’m surprised how secular Pope Leo XIV is being. Some scripture is being thrown around, namely that of Babel and Nehemiah, but mostly secular arguments. He really lays it all out in this chapter, goes only one step from calling out Sam Altman by name.

Pope Leo XIV is so fucking based. Read Chapter Two (Foundations and Principles of the Social Doctrine of the Church). Mainly framing arguments but I’ll assume that the next chapter will get into the meat of the anti-AI arguments. Mostly establishing why the church does or doesn’t endorse and support things.
