16. The significance of what I had accomplished was almost overwhelming. I was afraid, but fear didn’t stop me from doing what I wanted to do. This was the lesson my father wanted me to learn. The knowledge filled me with power.

13. Stephen is the only person on the face of the Earth who chose me. Who loves me not because he has to, but because he wants to. My gift from the universe for surviving my past.

12. I understand now that what my father did was wrong. Still, I don’t think my father wanted to hurt me. He only did what he believed he had to do to teach me a lesson. What I didn’t understand until much later was how my mother could watch the whole episode from across the table, as small and useless as the rabbit..., without lifting a finger to help me. It was a long time before I could forgive her for that

11. I think things would have been different if I had been a blonde. If I had looked like my mother, my grandparents might have loved me.

9. Just like he played on my interests when I was a child to turn me against my mother so subtly and thoroughly, it took years of therapy for me to accept the idea that she cared.
Eventually I realized that tracking is like reading. The signs are words. Connect them into sentences and they tell a story about an incident in the life of the animal that passed through.

8. I think it was just that I’d been hiding who I was for so long and trying so hard to fit in, I needed to reconnect with the person I used to be. It was a good life, until it wasn’t.
I looked again to my father, and suddenly, in a burst of insight, I realized I didn’t have to listen to my mother. Not anymore.
I was a hunter. A warrior. A person worthy of respect and honor. A wilderness man like my father.

5. I had no idea when I was growing up that there was anything wrong with my family. Children usually don’t. Whatever their situation, that’s what’s normal to them. Daughters of abusers fall in with abusive men as adults because that’s what they’re used to... If I had known then what I do now, things would have been different. I wouldn’t have adored my father. I would have been more understanding of my mother.

4. I had to cut all ties with the old. Still, I was my mother’s only child, and staying away from her funeral felt like a betrayal. The idea that I could never see or talk to her again also stung me. I didn’t want the same thing to happen with my father
