This battle and the proceeding events is really helpful in understanding Lee's mindset going into the Battle of Gettysburg. It also highlights the flawed but critical role Fighting Joe Hooker played in righting the Union ship.

Nearing the critical moments. This entire encounter helps me understand Lee's almost mythological view of his army's ability at Gettysburg.

Sears is amazing. It is fun after immersing in the Civil War for many years now it is fun to know names, people, and places which give you a foothold in the time.

True to Sears I feel right in the middle of the action, up close to the people, and inside their heads, while at the same time having a large view that keeps the context and setting. Sears writes so effectively and engagingly.
