Harry’s failure + the ending
• Harry does not solve himself —> given another chance to learn that life can be absurd, contradictory, and worth living
• Hermines death is symbolic. Harry’s dependence on her ends but everything she arose in him remains there
• He has to learn a new way to live through this transformation

Mozart + Pablo
• Pablo wants Harry to experience the Magic Theater as play—> Harry turns every experience into an existential crisis
• Mozart is humor+freedom shows Harry that seriousness is part of his prison—> learning to laugh at himself and becoming free

The Man + The Wolf
•Theatre breaks Harry’s belief that he is divided into two -> The man and wolf switch places bc neither is fixed
Gustav + Violence
• Gustav’s shooting scene allows Harry to act out his death/violence fantasy
• reality seeps in—> fantasy loses its power when consequence comes
• actually facing destruction changes things for Harry

Pablo
•Harry sees Pablo as shallow bc he doesn’t obsess over profound questions
•Pablo = presence, music, instinct, pleasure
•Harry sees that he confused intellectual suffering with depth
•depth doesn’t equal suffering
•Pablo may have understood Harry far more deeply than Harry understood Pablo

Magic Theater
•Harry’s inner psyche made visible
•many version of himself destroying man + wolf as his singular identity
•”All girls are yours one quarter in the slot” (ew btw) endless desires/possibilities
•exploring his selves
•Hesse blurs literal + imaginative
•fantasies become physically manifested

The poem/immortals
•humans experience birth,death,lust,suffering,pleasure as enormous things bc our lives are temporary
•the immortals exist outside of time and see human “drama” as a show
•their laughter doesn’t represent suffering as meaningless they see the tragic + ridiculous intertwined
•”cool and start bright”= freedom from desperate seriousness
• eternity = new perspective not escape

Dancing and Masquerade
•dancing forces Harry to participate in life w/ out analysis
•he experiences pleasure not strictly through his intellect
•through the masks ppl are more fluid/not fixed
•Harry experiences identity as multiple not man vs. wolf
•Hermine appears as Herman blurring self/other and feminine + masculine

Maria
•Sensual, free spirited, represents beauty+pleasure+living in the moment
•Shows Harry intimacy without requiring it to have deep philosophical meaning
•I appreciated how the “trivial” things were described as bringing color to life in an otherwise dull existence (the purse)
•life has value simply through being experienced

Hermine/Herman
•Hermine is both her own character + symbolic part of Harry’s psyche
•Hermine/Herman connected—> represents a side of Harry he cut off, helps him see that
•mirrors his loneliness+contradictions but approaches life w/ play, sensuality, humor, spontaneity
•Hermine = Harry learning to participate in life
•Also has desire for death —> also feels unable to fit in ordinary life

•each time is life is shattered he gains liberty + spiritual growth but is more lonely
•despises ordinary life but sees ppl might be right to live as they do
•recurring suicide = exhaustion—>unable to reconcile with plain existence—>not following thru becomes another reason to hate himself
•humor as liberation—>seeing enormity of his own contradictions and realizing the comical nature of it
