I’m struggling my way through this book. Not because it’s bad, but because I’m a speculative fiction reader and this is lit fic. I don’t require fistfights or unicorns on every page, but for a spec fic reader it’s like, “okay, whiny girl tries to decide if she hates her dead mother because of normal mother/daughter tension or because of internalized racism,” and this is not my jam.
