i'm really enjoying reading Emma's experience in her marriage contrasted with her husband. this book might just be really good.

At some points Flaubert will describe something of beauty, and then immediately undermine it with something disgusting. It's very interesting and strange.

"...while Charles had his back turned to her drawing the window-curtain, she said, "O God!" gave a sigh and fainted. She was dead! What a surprise!"
