Hesse seems to be constructing contradictory personal and moral philosophy for Goldmund, and also in retrospect for Harry Haller in Steppemwolf. I suppose it is a sort of growth that these stories show, but the culmination of lessons do not seem to resolve into a stable, satisfactory answer to the questions posed. If anything it’s again purposely counter the “correct” positive answer to these questions.

Bro Goldmund needs to chill.
