As a person who hate spoilers, I can relate with this post so much, Evie! But unless GR has changed, you cannot hide something under spoiler tags on updates. The spoiler tags only work for reviews. At least that was the case when I used to be more active a few years back. People just need to refrain for posting spoilers, I guess. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Not sure they are willing though. Yep. I do feel your pain. 🤕

@Jan I suppose I get confused by people who post their book updates on their reviews vs status updates (especially when I'm scrolling fast to avoid said spoilers unsuccessfully), but a good reminder of yet another GRs design failing lol. I guess all the more reason why people should just take half a second to think about someone other than themselves. Its just so frustrating and ruins a surprise for someone else 😭

Thank you for saying this. I wasn’t sure how to bring it up. I personally try to avoid spoilers as much as I can. I mean, I get that people are excited, but it kinda sucks to open Goodreads and see spoilery updates on your feed. It’s really hard to avoid here. If I could filter out spoiler updates, I would, tbh 😅

@Phylicia lol Its a tough one and I get it. My pre-order isn't due to get delivered until late August/Early September and that is completely out of my hands, so what are the options? That I just don't open Goodreads at all for a month in an effort to avoid spoilers? cause other people aren’t capable of a little empathy and consideration and saving their spoilery comments for their review and a spoiler tag? That seems like a pretty crappy solution.

Its worse cause the block function here is so garbage, cause even if I block the person doing the spoiling (which I did) it doesn't stop it coming up if someone else interacts with it 💀

@Nel I am not to sure tbh I scrolled away too quickly when I realised what I reading to notice (as if looking away quickly can unread it lol). I guess this can also just function as a timely reminder for everyone to be a little more mindful of what they're posting untagged immediately after a book is released. Like you can make posts that alludes to something so that people who know already know what you're talking about? but like maybe people can chill on the point blank statement spoilers lol.

@Nel hahahah I feel like this is a big of a chicken and egg situation where I wouldn't want to spoil someone else who sees this conversation. Unfortunately there's not much to be done about it now either way but it's just one less pleasant surprise I get to enjoy when I get my own copy.

@Youssra it's crazy infuriating and especially in your case where you have politely address it with someone too! So either they just don't care about anyone else's reading experience except their own, or they prioritise a bit of engagement on GRs over others potential enjoyment of a book. I feel like neither of those things is really something someone should aspire to? Kindness and consideration are free and it doesn't take much to give a bit of a heads up if a spoiler is going to be discussed 🫠

@Youssra sometimes that’s all you can do! and it’s their loss in the long run cause they don’t get to see all of your wonderful reviews! ❤️ I am just going to try and ignore it as best I can and just focus on enjoying the story and the finale when my copy shows up!

@Megan right??? The book was Ballad of Sword and Wine which has had the one continuous story across 8 volumes that have been being released over the last to years. It’s not a huge spoiler as such but it is one that would have given a reader a lot of joy to encounter on their own.

I get that people are excited but that doesn't give license to be inconsiderate of other people. Like it would be one thing if the book had been out months or years but its been literally days since its release and because the copies get shipped out from suppliers in the US often takes a while for copies to even reach shore here never mind read them ourselves.

End of the day there isn’t much that can be done to mitigate spoilers on GR other than encouraging people to think before they post and to put spoilers under a tag in their reviews 🫠

8 volumes? That somehow makes it even worse 😭😭 GR really needs to update their spoiler and blocking functions. Both can be seen if one of my friends interact with them. I’m sorry that happened.

I’ve had this happen with tv shows/movies a few times and it’s infuriating especially when it was just released. I was only in season 3 of Gossip Girl when the series finale ended and some lovely person had a status on FB an hour after it ended that “they couldn’t believe the gossip girl was X”. Really? 👀 I dropped the show after that. My husband (long distance bf at the time) thought I knew what happened in Homeland season 2? 3? to one of the main characters and started talking about it. 😭😭😭 Ruined the entire show for me. But I think the most egregious was my mom. She had just come back from seeing Gone Girl and I had just picked up the book. She proceeds to tell me all about the plot twist 😭😭😭😭 I put it down. I keep hoping I’ll forget the ending but it’s there in the recesses of my mind 🤣 I can’t remember what I ate for breakfast yesterday but still know the plot twist to a book I’ve never read 😂😂😂

@Megan it is actually the WORST and I am sorry that it has happened to you so many times! I feel like the truly accidental ones like your Husband are the worst too cause he probably felt so bad ahahahahah.

The GR functions really do need an overhaul in this space but as with so many quality of life updates that this site needs I wont hold my breath hahahahah

ohoh I know exactly what specific spoiler you mean. I also had it spoiled by someone just randomly commenting and it showing up in my feed. I don't remember who it was but it basically something like "X's first act as a Y was to do Z" - the fact that X became Y was a huge fucking spoiler! hopefully I was vague enough lol! "luckily" I had already known this spoiler from a while back but holy shit would I be angry. Still, nothing beats Seven Seas putting spoilers INTO THE BLURBS OF THE BOOKS D: Or in the case of Case File Compendium - on the COVERS! D:

ahh i genuinelly didn't look at the name of the commenter and didn't want to call out anyone. I blame Goodreads if anything, one leaves a basically private comment at a friend's update and boom, every single other friend or mutual also sees it :(

Don't stress too much Nel. I'm the same as Terka, I didn't stop to see names but the only place I put accountability in a situation like this is on the person who posted it originally and GRs shitty ass algorithm and spoiler function. Its not hard to like a comment and not really click to all the implications of it.
