Although my parents are from the mainland, my mother used to tell me how my grandmother thought she will never see my mother again when she was leaving for the US. The idea of a different location was unfathomable to her.
Heard a lot of stories about these “field trips” as well from friends and cousins. It’s such an important event for kids there.

The description of the lighthouse keeper reminds me of all my Japanese rural uncles. My mom would swear they are tender hearted but I was never convinced until I got older.

I am attempting to read this in Japanese as well as reading it in English, which is why my first update was about translating dialects. The mention that Yasuo does not use the local dialect reflects the Japanese pride of their prefecture or home location, all the while high regards to those who lose their dialect to the standard. Paints yasuo in a certain way.

Just as I felt towards Moby Dick I just finished reading, sea life is a whole other world. The technicalities of this lifestyle is so impressive as an outsider and ignorant person of it. Reminds me of Old Man and the Sea as well and makes me think about my grandfather who was a fisherman.

“The strange unrest was still with him this morning. But the vast ocean stretched away from the prow, where he was standing, and gradually the sight of it filled his body with the entregue of familiar…” must be nice to see the sea in daily life. It is an important element of the island country and is often incorporated in their arts and literature.
