My dad as the youngest of 4 boys was considered being adopted out like this after his mother died after the war.

Just as I felt towards Moby Dick I just finished reading, sea life is a whole other world. The technicalities of this lifestyle is so impressive as an outsider and ignorant person of it. Reminds me of Old Man and the Sea as well and makes me think about my grandfather who was a fisherman.

It is an important element of the island country and is often incorporated in their arts and literature.

Too bad dialects can’t be translated.

Imagine a world where you can’t picture the thing you’re hunting for because there is no photography or paintings & the only way to fully know what it looks like is to see it for your own eyes and risking your life. Did the narrator do a better job describing it with his words over the few paintings that actually existed of them. No wonder there are mythical creatures

The message I’m getting: every one of us should remove ourselves from familiar surroundings at least once in our lives.

When I read this chapter I was able to imagine up Queequeg from the description the narrator provided but I noticed I couldn’t imagine the narrator himself next to Queequeg. There’s such a contrast in the lack of description of himself. Maybe it’s an intentional tact from the writer. The reflection on humanity was insightful too.

How do authors capture protagonists different from themselves? The way they make me empathize with fictional characters even if their bias may or may not add to the character is like omnipotent. The family is full of love, the couple is full of love. Love to all protective older sisters.

Breath of fresh air after reading super old foreign stories.

He is worse than the first. Why is she giving in? I don’t understand.

I was glad for Jane too to discover she had family. But what is going on with the cousin.

Also want to add that I was impressed by the protagonist’s ability to resist her temptation and really did cut that man out of her life. “Yes; I feel now that I was right when I adhere to principle and law, and scorned and crushed the insane promptings of a frenzied moment” (414).

They really don’t get to the point. And really like to go on about whether someone is ugly or not.

Jane panics a bit at the thought of her new name. This chapter feels symbolic as the title is “Jane Erye”. She is realistic to warn Mr Rochester that the adornments will only make her further from herself. Maybe a premonition of how infatuation blinds the truth. Mrs Fairfax’s gut also feels this. Young Adele even shoots down Mr Rochester’s imprisoning or romanic allegory of the matrimony.

(Spoilers) Jane is the bigger person when she forgives and pities her aunt of her hatred towards her. But still the aunt does the right thing and confesses to her wrong doings on her death bed. Her children all bear the consequences. Mr Rochester continues to charm Jane after her return. They can’t deny their infatuation, what will happen to his engagement?

Not sure what to make of his little disguise but it’s different.

Mr Rochester does seem interestingly particular but he is still annoying. Jane relating to Adele’s life was heart breaking. So Mr Rochester killed someone… ??maybe they’re not dead? It is becoming suspenseful after the fire incident.

A spooky scene and she’s bored and a man enters in a charming way… it’s getting predictable.

I was thinking about why more rich people wouldn’t contribute to Lowood and got to know Mr Brocklehurt better. Yuck! While he lectured about the lords suffering, I asked what are you wearing?? The hypocrisy entering with his wife and daughters made me cringe and I wondered if I can take the book seriously anymore. We shall see.

I would like to know what others think about chapter 6. I felt mad that Helen was defending Mrs. Scatcherd’s abuse towards her. But Helen’s philosophy sounds stoic and supposedly she doesn’t let it bother her? Which sounds like she is unbothered and won’t let anything affect her.

Jane telling Mrs Reed how it is was very satisfying. She didn’t even need to degrade Mrs Reed or anything because Mrs Reed’s behavior already did.

Nature is beauty. He knows how to find the good in things.

Either he was surrounded by the most amazing people or he has a skill to find the good in any person and write a damn gratitude journal

The slow and tortured death could not have been written any better than this. Reconfirms my love for antiheros.

Wondering what Emma’s bursts of her religious obsessions mean, is it like all or nothing thinking? Since she can’t act upon her desires she internalizes it with her idea of self sacrifice/ suffering?

Having a visceral reaction after this chapter. How is it that Rodolphe have no lingering at all after all that? I think it is still that Emma is grieving over her only chance at freedom rather than Rodolphe (freedom> Rodolphe) and the only chance of “freedom” for her was to still be depending on a man.

Lots of beautiful descriptions. I like how it concludes back to the wedding bouquet from when Emma was wondering what would happen to hers if she died compared to Charles’ previous wive’s.

This feels like those dreams you’re trying to run in but can’t. Is it just me or is there magical realism in this? I feel more of the drowning feeling from this book than the one I read before this, Nausea.
