Hooking up with a self important, self-involved, brutal lout like Ted Hughes may be the only way in which the extraordinarily gifted Sylvia Plath was ordinary — like a lot of girls, yesterday and today, she couldn’t see what a jerk he was, or how awful he was for her, and hooked up with him. Had she not acted as his publicist early on, at a cost to her own literary creativity, I doubt he'd have amounted to much.

The sadness of this is deep and heartbreaking. She really only wanted someone to love her. Horrific things happened to her instead.
There is almost too many moment by moment details in this huge bio, but when you get to the early 50s, it rips your heart out for this lovely woman writer/poet.

It must be very comprehensive"It can be so detailed it's tedious, and I certainly don't always agree with the biographer's drawn conclusions, but there is a wealth of information in it. It is perhaps too much detail, which causes the overall perspective to be lost somewhat in the weeds. It is too clinical, not passionate enough. And in a bend over backwards effort to give a balanced view it is much too sympathetic toward some in Plath's orbit in my opinion, while, at the same time, too light on Plath's perspective. But that's what happens when the subject is no longer around to give their side. I have to take breaks from it from time to time.
