like i think there is a line where you should be behind bars: like rape. that never happens by accident or in self defense. rape is done with full realization with what you're doing. especially heinous when the victim is a child.

legalizing marijuana: yay! legalizing hard drugs: now why the everloving fuck would you do that?????? like that's where i draw the line. i will always be negative towards drugs, marijuana i can understand but anything else.. look, i still would have an uncle if drugs didn't exist, if he hadnt gotten in with bad crowd and if our government would have bothered to help addicts like him.

ideally i think it would be way way less prisons (and evn those prisons reformed) and more money put to making communities better. rehabilitation and reform instead of keeping poor people poor and young people in bad circles.

i think it should be one and done, especially if you haven't done anything worse than say, idk, robbed someone lol. sometimes desparation, hunger, anger, mental illness etc drive a person to do something immoral.

ESPECIALLY when it was clearly a mistake of his younger years that he has made amends for, why should he still be punished for it?

reminds me of the case where during one of those border crossing tv shows a guy was denied entry, idr if it was australia because he had a previous conviction from like a decade ago. and he had made himself better and gotten clean. it was so baffling.

if not jail, then get registered as a sex offender and never approach a child again.

ngl it blows my mind that you can get send to prison for anything. like how does it help anybody to jail, say, someone for tax evasion? shoplifting?

so i can't be all for prison abolition and i doubt i Will ever be, but i am understanding Davis' pov. It is uniquely skeeved towards making every non-white citizen's life harder instead of keeping genuine criminals off the streets.

while this book focuses on the american prison system, an uniquely awful one (lol), id be very curious to know how many of these things apply elsewhere. what little i know of prisons all over thr world, it does change a lot how prisoners are treated etc.
