I think Ronan is going to die, and its because Ronan is a physical representation of Brendan's childhood.
They have been best friends throughout all of school, and it is only once Ronan is unable to go to school that Brendan has to make more adult decisions. He gets a girlfriend, takes his final exams, takes his driving exam, etc. Ronan's death signifies the end of Brendan's childhood.
