the chapter with designori was great. i feel like designori in general is such a show-stealer.

that said, i feel like every time hesse tries to act deep or man-plain buddhism incorrectly, it seems so contrite. it's not that these ideologies are shallow, but it's shallow coming from him. he feels like he's trying to convince himself, and thus, is unconvincing to the reader

i feel like the reflections on tegularius and the discussions of history + his view that was separated from art (clearly wrong) were really interesting. i think this book is really good when it's good - in the sense that it provokes a lot of interesting thought from the reader despite not being entirely perfect.

slow but it's making me think a lot so i'm enjoying it. i feel like hesse's description of a "psychological game" fits how i feel about this book tbh

- the whole elder brother scene is so unintentionally funny lmaoo (we love orientalism)
