the chapter with designori was great. i feel like designori in general is such a show-stealer.
that said, i feel like every time hesse tries to act deep or man-plain buddhism incorrectly, it seems so contrite. it's not that these ideologies are shallow, but it's shallow coming from him. he feels like he's trying to convince himself, and thus, is unconvincing to the reader

i feel like the reflections on tegularius and the discussions of history + his view that was separated from art (clearly wrong) were really interesting. i think this book is really good when it's good - in the sense that it provokes a lot of interesting thought from the reader despite not being entirely perfect.

- been thinking about how this was written during the rise of the nazi party and despite hesse being criticized for being apolitical, i think this book wouldn't have been written under any other circumstance
- it does however highlight hesse's blindspot, which imo, doesn't actually bother me for this particular novel since it actually helps support the thesis
