I loved my city but I uprooted any dutiful defense of it. I was convinced the anguish in which that love ended was a lens through which to look at the entire West. Naples was the great European metropolis where faith in technology, science, economic development, the kindness of nature, history of necessity to improvement, in democracy, was revealed, clearly & far in advance - completely without foundation
