I started this because people on Threads were saying Rachel Gillig is one of the best fantasy authors currently writing, and that this book actually was being mislabeled and isn’t romantasy, but is instead plain old fantasy with a romance subplot.

So far, I think Gillig is not a very skilled writer and it is reading VERY much like Romantasy to me, but I shall keep y’all updated.

Every time I pick up a Romantasy book (which this book undeniably is), I find myself utterly baffled at the unbelievability of the romance.
It may just be that it’s poorly written (which, again, this book undeniably is), but the characters and their connections feel so forced and unconvincing and bland.
Sybil and Rory are not fun to follow. I don’t believe they’re in love, nor do I care about them at all.

Olga S I really loved this. And it IS a romantasy, btw!

Meg Percy It is quite meh

Emma Take the romance plot out, and the plot falters. It's romantasy, hands down.

(One could go so far as to say there is more potential, but one categorizes books not by 'what could have been if explored more' but by what actually made it into the published version.)

Laura Shoults I really enjoyed her other duology but this was not very good and is very much romantasy
